Meta-Analysis Birth Weight and Subsequent Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: A Meta-Analysis

چکیده
The ‘‘small baby syndrome hypothesis’’ suggests that an inverse linear relation exists between birth weight and risk of type 2 diabetes. The authors conducted a meta-analysis to examine this association. They included studies that reported odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (or data with which to calculate them) for the association of type 2 diabetes with birth weight. Fourteen studies involving a total of 132,180 persons were identified. Low birth weight (<2,500 g), as compared with a birth weight of 2,500 g, was associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes (odds ratio (OR) 1⁄4 1.32, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.06, 1.64). High birth weight (>4,000 g), as compared with a birth weight of 4,000 g, was associated with increased risk to the same extent (OR 1⁄4 1.27, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.59). Pooled estimates increased further when normal birth weight (2,500–4,000 g) was used as the reference category (low birth weight: OR 1⁄4 1.47, 95% CI: 1.26, 1.72; high birth weight: OR 1⁄4 1.36, 95% CI: 1.07, 1.73). Meta-regression and categorical analyses showed a U-shaped relation between birth weight and diabetes risk. These findings indicate that there exists a relation between birth weight and later-life risk of type 2 diabetes which is not linearly inverse but U-shaped.

Meta- and Pooled Analyses Birth Weight, Early Weight Gain, and Subsequent Risk of Type 1 Diabetes: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Previous studies suggest that birth weight and weight gain during the first year of life are related to later risk of type 1 diabetes. The authors performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on these associations. Twelve studies involving 2,398,150 persons of whom 7,491 had type 1 diabetes provided odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of type 1 diabetes associated with birth weight. Fou...

Background and Aim: Several investigations have evaluated the association of miR-146a rs2910164 and miR-27a rs895819 single-nucleotide polymorphisms with susceptibility to type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, the findings are conflicting and inconclusive. Therefore, this meta-analysis performed to investigate the association between these polymorphisms and T2D risk. Methods: Studies were identifie...
متن کاملA Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials Comparing the Safety of Dapagliflozin in Type 1 Diabetes Patients
Background and Purpose: The dapagliflozin’s safety profile in insulin-treated adult type-1 diabetes mellites (T1DM) patients remains poorly explored. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis compared the risk of all-cause side effects, study discontinuation of participants due to side effects, urinary tract infection (UTI), diabetic ketoacidosis, and hypoglycemia between dapagliflozi...
متن کاملBirth weight and type 2 diabetes: A meta-analysis
The prevalence of T2DM is increasing around the world on a yearly basis. A meta-analysis was conducted to analyze the association between birth weight and incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A literature search was performed from January 1990 to June 2016 in PubMed, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database. After r...
